Hosted by MIT IDEAS Global Challenge

We may have the best of intentions when we want to work for a better world and undertake projects that will have a positive social impact, but what does it take to actually work wisely, effectively, and ethically when doing community-based research?

Join us for this workshop series, where we’ll discuss the ethics of innovation and community engagement, explore case studies of past MIT projects, and provide an introduction to user-centered fieldwork methodology. Throughout we will explore practical skills, as well as fundamental questions such as: When is innovation needed? What types of approaches (participatory or other) make sense for the given context? What are potential adverse effects of an innovation on stakeholders, institutions, and markets? What are some strategies I can use if I encounter ethical challenges when doing fieldwork?

The workshops will build on each other, so participants are encouraged to attend all sessions, but participation for one session is welcome. Remaining sessions include:

  • SESSION 4: Fieldwork Challenges – Case Studies & Scenarios
    Friday, December 9, 12–2 pm
  • SESSION 5: Post-Fieldwork Reflection (attendees from Sessions 1-4 will be invited)
    Thursday, February 16, 5–7 pm
