The historic facade of the Suffolk Building remains, but the interior of E38 has been entirely transformed into the I&E hub for student innovation and entrepreneurship activity and a welcoming entrance to MIT’s east campus. Floors three through seven are now MIT InnovationHQ—a series of open and collaborative spaces combining student collaborative and maker space with open office space for innovation and entrepreneurship program staff.

In total, InnovationHQ (iHQ for short) encompasses over 25,000 square feet of space for innovation and entrepreneurship activities. The design draws on the experiences of the renovated E40 Martin Trust Center space, the previous MIT Innovation Initiative (E70 at One Broadway), and other leading innovation spaces in the area. It provides enhanced workspaces for students with an emphasis on large, open, collaborative spaces where serendipitous meetings might occur, along with offices for key program staff and researchers, conference rooms, teaching spaces, and meeting rooms. The intentional creation of multi-use space encourages the cross-pollination of ideas among MIT students, faculty and staff, and the broader innovation community of Kendall Square.

iHQ is the new home of Legatum Center for Development & Entrepreneurship, MIT Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation, MIT Innovation Initiative, MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund Program, MIT Venture Mentoring Service, New England I-Corps @ MIT, and innovative new spaces for MIT Alumni and MIT Music & Theater Arts.
