Opportunity

Sponsored by: MADMEC

Materials science can provide solutions for energy storage, building efficiency, transportation, and many other needs in today’s society. MADMEC invites student teams to develop and build prototypes that address these and more challenges.

MADMEC is a team-based competition. Teams must include at least two members, and a maximum of five, comprised of MIT-students only. At least two members of each team must be a full-time graduate or undergraduate student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Faculty and staff are allowed to advise and consult with teams, but may not be official team members. Postdocs, unless MIT graduates on or after September 2014, cannot be team members.

DOW Chemical and Saint Gobain will not claim a stake in any intellectual property (IP) generated during participation in MADMEC.

After the registration due date, teams will be notified about continuing their participation in MADMEC.

These teams will be able to receive up to $1,000 in funding from MADMEC for their prototype. Funding will be in the form of reimbursement – all expenditures must have receipts or invoices, and must be submitted to MADMEC within two weeks after the MADMEC finals to be eligible for reimbursement. MADMEC can also purchase materials, tools, etc for your group so you don’t have to spend money out-of-pocket. These funds will be deducted from your available budget.

Any prior work you have done that is related to your MADMEC project will be taken into account when judging and evaluating your team. All teams will be judged according to what was accomplished and developed during the competition, and not on any prior experience, prototypes or research.
