All MIT School of Engineering students (students from other majors may also be eligible – please inquire) are invited to apply to GEL1. Students may first apply to the program in their sophomore year; they may enter as juniors or seniors.
Prospective students should have an interest in working in engineering-related industries and have the bandwidth and willingness to commit to program requirements. The program selects promising engineering undergraduate students based on interest level and demonstrated engineering leadership potential.
Students who successfully complete GEL1 requirements will earn a GEL Year One Program Certificate of Engineering Leadership.
Prospective GELs will fill out a brief application and complete an in-person interview. Your application will include:
- Demographic data: major, GPA, etc.
- An updated resume listing relevant experience, honors, etc.
- Short answers to questions regarding your engineering leadership experience and career goals

GEL’s admission season is typically early in the spring semester (check the website for announcements and deadlines). The selection process for GEL1 applicants includes a review of completed application packets by ELP faculty/staff and/or current GELs.
UPOP (the Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program) is a welcome foundation for GEL. It is not a prerequisite. In UPOP, students receive professional development training, mentoring by MIT alums, access to internships and much more.
In addition to students applying individually to GEL1, we welcome applicant nominations through faculty/staff of MIT’s School of Engineering Departments, project team leaders, and/or other faculty who believe they have suitable and appropriate candidates (faculty are encouraged to submit names of appropriate candidates to Eileen Milligan, Communications and Outreach Administrator).
Rolling Admissions*:
*Apply early as there are limited spots in the program! We will announce a final application deadline halfway into the semester in mid-April.
