What is Maker Break?

Maker Break is a celebration of making for MIT students where you can have fun and show your smart and creative sides. You can engage in friendly competition with fellow students, cheer on your friends and classmates, and explore making in ways that are new to you. There is something for everyone! It is designed to be fun and low stress. You can stay for 4 minutes or 4 hours; it’s up to you.

What can we make at Maker Break?

Competitions:

There will be both individual and group making competitions at MIT Maker Break.

Named after the Kangaroo, a proposed choice for the MIT mascot before Tim the Beaver, the Joey (individual/pair) and Kangaroo (group) competitions are as follows:

  • Joey Rubber Band Car Tournament
  • Joey RC Car Tournament
  • Kangaroo Egg Throwing Catapult Competition
  • Kangaroo BattleBots Tournament

Find out more about these events here.

Experiences:

For less competition-focused making, some of the activities available at MIT Maker Break are:

Machine Autopsy • Welding Pi Digits • Will it Crush? • Build a Bike Light • Jewelry Making • Vinyl Cutting • Candle Making • Dry Ice Ice Cream • Delish Chocolate Break • Origami Station • Machine Petting Zoo • Paper Airplane Contest • 3D Photo Booth

Spectators:

There will be activities planned for all skill levels, so all students are encouraged to attend. Spectators and cheering squads are also an important part of the celebration.

Food trucks:

Come enjoy Clover, Tenoch Mexican, Roxy’s Grilled Cheese and Frozen Hoagies. MIT Maker Break attendees will get vouchers for free lunch!
